The recent village with its 17th century Jesuit church is built on the site of an ancient settlement beside Lake Titicaca. The Spaniards built their churches on or very close to native shrines and an Inca walled enclosure, a Christian Cross and the remains of what some consider a fertility ground are side by side. The rows of stone objects were arranged in 1970/72.
