Belize.   In 1970 the Belizean government decided to build a new capital city at Belmopan, in the heart of the country. The name derives from Belize and 'Mopan' , a Mayan language. The most important buildings, including the National Assembly in the photo, are constructed around a main plaza, following ancient Maya custom.
