Brazil: traditionally much of the land in the south and centre has been given over to cattle ranching and agriculture. In recent years large tracts of original forest have been felled and ranches created. Zebu cattle are a popular breed because they survive well in dry and harsh areas. Cowboys who work with the cattle are known as gaúchos in the south of Brazil , and vaqueiros in the north.
