Brazil: Ceará state is one of the driest parts of the country. The valleys have seasonal watercourses and are traditionally agricultural areas:some like this near Juazeiro do Norte have a sugar industry dating from Portuguese colonial times. The cane is cut by hand and the sugar extracted in age-old fashion. A scrub vegetation / caatinga covers the hillsides flanking the valley.
