Chile: vines were first brought to Chile in the 16th century as priests needed wine for their religious services and in the mid 19th century a grower introduced French varieties into the Central valley. Chile began to export its wine in 1870, hundreds of acres of land were turned over to vineyards, and the industry prospered.
