MAIN
STREET - ARACATACA - COLOMBIA
|
|
Aracataca
is a small town about 30kms inland from the Caribbean. At one time
it was a stop on the railway line from the coast to Bogotá
the capital. The climate is tropical and life is easy going. The
main street is busy with people, noisy with music and totally unhurried.
It was here back in March 1927 that Gabriel García Márquez
was born. 'Gabo' as he known affectionately is Colombia's only Nobel
prize winning author and just one of four in Latin America. He began
writing in journalism and after turning to literature his major
novel One Hundred Years of Solitude was published in 1967
as Cien Años de Soledad. The
story is set in Macondo a fictional village often seen as

Vivir para Contarle / Living to Tell the Tale - the first
part of his autobiography [2002] |
| "When
Grandfather gave me a dictionary, it awakened such a curiosity about
words in me that I read it like a novel, in alphabetical order,
scarcely understanding it. That was my first contact with what would
be the fundamental book in my destiny as a writer. |
