UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL TRANS-CONTINENTAL EXPEDITION 1960-61

THE TEAM IN THE ANDES MOUNTAINS

The expedition team was travelling from Lima in Peru to La Paz,Bolivia when this short clip was made by Tony and Mark on 16mm black and white film. In the background is El Misti volcano 5822m in the western Andes mountains near Arequipa. The road skirts the southern flank of volcano at about 3500m and in an era of climate change leads upwards to an arid wilderness of saline lakes and more volcanoes. In 1961 the area was rain-soaked and snow lay in the highest parts. The commentary by Malcolm McKernan was added later in a television production shown by Television Wales and West in 1962 [TWW]
